Yesterday, Tyger, myself and his 10-year-old daughter went to check out The Mayday Underground Crafts & Art sale in Rochester, NY. This event took place at the Village Gate on Goodman Street. The post I saw the day prior said to start arriving at 9am. It didn’t actually open until 10am. Okay…whatever. But then we went upstairs at opening time. Ugh….
To be fair, there were a number of great artists and crafters there. We even made a few small purchases, including a Christmas gift for a family member who shall not be named. Unfortunately, this event was not exactly what I was expecting.
Let’s start with this. I have love for everyone. I don’t care about your race, religion, gender, sexuality, politics. You are who you are. Be who you want to be. Love who you want. Worship who you want. Vote for who you want. But that’s just the point. I do not care. I feel as though we have crossed the line, from love and acceptance, to ramming it so far down my throat that it comes up and gets shoved down my neighbor’s throat, and so on and so on. (Yes, I realize the humor in my choice of words)
I do not care to ascend the stairs to the second floor, WITH MY 10-YEAR-OLD STEP-DAUGHTER!!!!! and see cat nip toys shaped like tits and dicks. Yes…that is correct…TITS and DICKS. Now, I am able to find the humor in this. But there is a time and a place. A family friendly event was neither the time nor the place. As we wandered further into the sale, there was no shortage of merchandise advertising genders, sexualities, etc. There was merch that was clearly politically “liberal” leaning…including pins that stated, ” I will aide and abet an abortion”, “. Hmmmm. Now I don’t necessarily disagree with certain politics that were on display, but again, time and place people, time and place! There were also a number of items that crossed the line between pushing for equality between genders and just plain old man hating. Add to the that the plethora of rainbows and pins and stickers, and ____ that announce your gender and who you love. Okay? Shall I walk around with a pin that says, “Straight and proud female birthed from my mom’s vagina.” or would that be wrong? Can I vend my homemade products that display in pictures and words, etc. how much I like dick? or would that be wrong? It’s starting to feel like what’s good for the goose should be good for the gander.
Where is the line? Mayday!
